In plain English
What is ?
Whole life is permanent coverage with contractual premiums, death benefits, and cash values, provided you meet the policy’s requirements. Some policies may pay dividends, but dividends are not guaranteed.
Who it may fit
- People with a lasting need for a death benefit
- Buyers able to maintain premiums through changing budgets
- Families who value contractual guarantees
When to look elsewhere
Someone seeking the largest near-term death benefit for a limited budget, or someone who may need all their money back in the early years.
How it works

Compare coverage, costs, and policy terms.
Apply with the insurer and review the final offer.
Keep the policy and beneficiary choices up to date.
Coverage and features to compare
- Review guaranteed values separately from dividend illustrations.
- Cash value often grows slowly in the early years.
- Loans accrue interest and reduce available benefits.
- Ask how premiums are scheduled and what happens if payments stop.
How pricing works
Whole life usually costs more than term for the same initial death benefit. Age, health, benefit amount, payment period, and insurer all affect the offer.
Questions about whole life
Will the insurer pay me extra money each year?+
Some policies may pay extra amounts called dividends, but these are not guaranteed. Past payments do not promise a future payment.
Can I borrow against the policy?+
Yes, if the policy has enough cash value to borrow from. The loan charges interest and reduces what your family receives if you do not repay it. A large unpaid loan can end the coverage and may create a tax bill.
Will my family get both the savings and the insurance payout?+
Usually, your family receives the policy’s stated payout. Do not assume the savings inside the policy will be paid on top of that amount. Ask how the specific policy works.
What guarantees the policy?+
You must make the required payments and follow the policy rules. The insurance company must also be financially able to keep its promises.
