In plain English

What is ?

A child’s whole life policy can provide a small lifetime benefit and cash value. A child rider on a parent’s policy can be a lower-cost alternative. Neither replaces adequate coverage on the adults a child relies on.

Who it may fit

  • Families who already have a sound protection and savings foundation
  • Grandparents considering a policy they can own for a grandchild
  • Parents interested in specific future purchase rights

When to look elsewhere

Families sacrificing emergency savings or essential coverage on parents to pay for a child’s policy. It is not a substitute for an education savings plan.

How pricing works

Young issue ages can mean low dollar premiums, but the benefit is also small. Compare lifetime obligations and early surrender values instead of focusing on the monthly amount alone.

Questions about kids plans

Can a grandparent own the policy?+

Some insurers allow a grandparent to own the policy, with the required family permission and a qualifying relationship to the child. Discuss who will pay and who will control the policy as the child grows up.

Does coverage automatically double at 18?+

Only if the specific contract says so. Ask for the guaranteed schedule.

Is adding a child to my policy less expensive?+

Often, yes. A child add-on usually provides a smaller payout for a lower cost. Check which children qualify, when it ends, and whether it can become a separate policy later.

Are the savings inside the policy the same as college savings?+

No. It is part of an insurance contract with charges and access rules. Compare other savings choices separately.
